Seeking clarity on some of my mother's practices
Salam, everyone. Just wanted to share something that's been on my mind and see if anyone has any insight. For years, my family has dealt with some really difficult issues, and my mother has been turning to a spiritual guide overseas for help. She sends him money regularly and relies on his advice for all sorts of things, even when it comes to marriage prospects for my sisters-she’ll send pictures to him for his opinion because he seems to know a lot about our lives without us telling him. Part of his guidance includes wearing black strings on our wrists after reciting some Surahs and Duas over them. My mother also does this thing where she hangs a necklace over her palm and asks it questions, watching which way it swings, calling it a form of istikhara. She’s even mentioned others getting harmed while trying to help us with spiritual matters. Honestly, this has never sat right with me. I always thought we should rely only on Allah for guidance and protection. Is there any Islamic basis for these practices? Like, if someone is genuinely trying to remove harm or black magic, does that make it okay? She once had me use an egg for something similar, and I'm not sure about that either. I've mostly stopped arguing with her about it to keep the peace-I even wore the string for a while just to make her happy, though I made sure to seek forgiveness since it wasn’t from my heart (I’ve taken it off now, alhamdulillah). If anyone has any knowledge or resources on this, I’d really appreciate your advice. JazakAllah khair.
