Verbal Description of the Physical Attributes of Prophet Muhammad SAW from Authentic Sources
Islam prohibits visual depictions of Prophet Muhammad SAW, but verbal descriptions of his appearance are permitted based on authentic narrations. Hussein Haikal in "Hayaatu Muhammad" describes the Prophet SAW as having fair skin, a handsome countenance, a medium build, hair that was black and somewhere between curly and straight, with a broad forehead, wide eyes of deep black, a refined nose, a gap between his front teeth, a thick beard, and a broad chest. He walked leaning forward with quick steps, and had a face marked by thoughtfulness and a commanding gaze.
It is reported that these physical traits were also witnessed by Ummu Ma'bad during the Hijrah. She described the Prophet SAW as having a radiant face, high charisma, speech that was clear and comforting, and as appearing the most handsome in his group. His compatibility with Khadijah bint Khuwailid, a woman of high status, is also noted.
Another witness, the companion Jabir radhiyallahu anhu, recounted his experience of looking at the full moon in Medina, then seeing the Prophet SAW emerge from his house looking fresh, with clean, glowing skin, well-groomed hair, and wearing a red cloak with black stripes. Jabir stated, 'By Allah, I saw him as far more beautiful than that full moon.'
