Raising Awareness for Sudan - A Reminder
Assalamualaikum, I wrote this piece to raise awareness about Sudan and try to educate people on what's happening there. Please share and tell me your thoughts, opinions, or objections. The World’s “Forgotten War” In much of today’s news coverage about genocide and conflict, most attention goes to two places: Ukraine and Palestine/Gaza. While it’s important those are covered, there is a quiet ethnic cleansing and massive suffering in Sudan that many people barely know about. A catastrophe of equal - maybe greater - scale is tearing Sudan apart. Darfur faces renewed ethnic cleansing, famine is spreading, and millions of families have been displaced. If Sudan sat on someone else’s strategic border or underpinned major energy markets, it would get more attention. But because it doesn’t, the crisis is largely ignored. Why does Sudan get far less coverage than Ukraine or Gaza? There are a few reasons: geopolitical interests, racial bias, media dynamics, and structural barriers that reduce visibility for Sudan’s crisis. One major reason is that no major power sees its core interests threatened by the war. Conflicts that involve big powers or vital resources attract headlines; Sudan’s suffering threatens neither European borders nor global oil supplies, so it’s deprioritized. How outside powers treat Sudan when it suits them Sudan sits at the crossroads of Africa and the Arab world and is rich in resources like gold and fertile land. For decades foreign actors have treated Sudan as a site for extracting resources and influence rather than protecting its people. Gold, in particular, has been used to finance militias and fuel the conflict. There are links between smuggling networks and outside interests that profit from the chaos. Failures of international institutions The UN, the African Union, and global humanitarian agencies have not lived up to their role in stopping the devastation. The AU’s promises of African-led mediation and peacekeeping struggled because of lack of funding, limited authority, and divisions among member states. Different regional actors back opposing sides, and that fragmentation prevents a unified, decisive response. Breaking the silence Sudan is not a footnote or an “African problem.” It’s a humanitarian catastrophe unfolding now - famine, mass displacement, and ethnic targeting. Human life should not be measured by geopolitics or natural resources. A starving child in Sudan deserves the same concern as a child anywhere else. Our shared humanity obliges us to speak up. Raising awareness is not mere charity; it’s a responsibility. Even if global systems have turned away, we can still challenge the idea that some lives matter less. Sudan deserves headlines, justice, and a global community that stands with its people. May Allah grant ease and protection to those suffering, and may this note inspire you to learn more and speak up for the forgotten. Please share this and leave your thoughts.
