My Childhood Best Friend Started Drinking – Feeling Conflicted
Salaam everyone. Let me start by saying I’m no angel. I don’t follow every Islamic rule perfectly, partly because my parents were quite strict about religion when I was growing up, and that made me kind of resent it. But they weren’t extreme, so I’m not totally disconnected-there’s still a lot of guilt that sticks with me. My best friend from school used to wear hijab because her parents made her, but a few years ago she moved to Canada. She stopped covering, started wearing different clothes, and going on dates. But honestly, she’s one of the best people I know-so smart, so kind, and she’s been my rock through tough times. Even though we’re far apart, we’ve only gotten closer. Recently, I found out she’s started drinking too. I don’t think it’s a regular thing, but it’s happened more than once. Maybe it’s how I was raised, but drinking and smoking were always seen as huge sins, especially drinking. I once tried shisha because of some relatives, and I know a lot of Muslims smoke, so I don’t see that as haram in the same way. But with drinking, it feels really wrong, like a serious line crossed-like there’s no coming back from it, if that makes sense. I’m not trying to say I’m super religious or that I want to be, but I’m wondering: does this make me a hypocrite? Is it right to feel ashamed? Have any of you been through something similar, where you’re balancing different levels of haram in your friendships? I know some Muslims would just cut off a friend for this, or at least try to guide them. But she’s not asking for my advice, and religion is a sensitive topic for her because of her parents. I just don’t know how to handle it-most of my friends do something haram, and the ones who don’t tend to be really judgmental, which I don’t think is right either. JazakAllah khair for any thoughts.
