Alleged Hijab Ban at Unhan Campus Under Spotlight, MUI Demands Clarification
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) is urging the Defense University (Unhan) to quickly issue an official clarification about the alleged hijab ban for prospective female students. Siti Ma'rifah, head of MUI’s women, youth, and family division, stressed that if the allegation turns out to be true, such a policy violates citizens’ constitutional rights as outlined in Article 29 of the 1945 Constitution.
Siti Ma'rifah said a clarification matters because Unhan is a strategic educational institution that should be nurturing an inclusive and mutually respectful generation. She also pushed for firm action if the discriminatory rule is confirmed, since it could disrupt national unity. “A hijab ban would wound the meaning of freedom and set the nation’s journey back,” she remarked.
This issue blew up after a prospective student for Unhan's undergraduate medical program, Asma Wafa Andina, claimed she dropped out despite passing the central selection stage because she faced an unwritten policy requiring her to remove her hijab. So far, Unhan hasn’t given any official statement.
