Sukomoro Nganjuk's Unique Nyadran Tradition: Prayers Begin Based on Wind Direction Signal
Sukomoro Village in Nganjuk celebrates Nyadran during the Javanese month of Selo, a thanksgiving tradition blending prayers, arts, and waiting for a sign from nature. The events start with Istigasah at the sacred site, followed by residents holding individual gratitude meals to express thanks for blessings and health.
The peak event on Friday (15/5) saw thousands of villagers bringing ambeng (offering trays), while village officials carried the Tumpeng Sedekah Bumi (Earth offering cone). Interestingly, prayers led by the Modin (religious leader) begin only after waiting for a wind signal from the north or east, following a long-held tradition.
After the prayers, the solemn atmosphere turns into a community celebration with entertainment like Wayang Golek (rod puppet show), Timplong (local art), and Tayub (traditional Javanese dance) lasting until dawn. This Nyadran serves as a symbol of harmony among people, nature, and gratitude to God.
