Why do some people keep raising their index finger during prayer?

Salam! I've noticed in salah that some people raise their finger just once when saying the Tashahhud, while others keep it raised until they finish with the salam. I'm wondering what the reason behind this difference is-is it related to specific schools of thought or personal preference? Would love to hear more insights.
