UN expert’s report accuses many states of enabling the Gaza atrocity - Assalamu Alaikum
Assalamu Alaikum - An independent UN expert has released a detailed report accusing dozens of states of playing roles that enabled the suffering in Gaza, calling for a new kind of international cooperation that protects human dignity.
Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on Palestine, presented a 24-page report titled “Gaza Genocide: a collective crime,” delivered remotely from Cape Town. She says Gaza has been left “strangled, starved, shattered,” and that the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank resulted from a long stand of political and moral failures across the world.
The report examines the actions or inaction of 63 states and argues that many governments, through direct support, diplomatic shielding and military ties, have allowed Israel’s policies to grow into what she calls a settler-colonial project that has reached the level of genocide. It criticises the use of diplomatic forums, military cooperation - including weapons sales and joint training - and the politicisation of aid, as factors that fed the violence.
A central point in the report is that the United States provided diplomatic cover at the UN Security Council, using its veto power multiple times and shaping ceasefire talks. Other Western countries are accused of enabling the situation through abstentions, delays and weakened resolutions, often hiding behind calls for ‘balance.’
The report also notes continued arms supplies from several countries even as evidence of atrocities mounted. It highlights the US Congress approving a large defence package for Israel at a time when plans to advance into Rafah were a declared red line for some policymakers. Germany and the UK are singled out for significant military and surveillance support.
Albanese additionally points to the role of regional states and normalisation deals that have left Arab and Muslim governments complicit, including Egypt’s ongoing security and economic ties with Israel and restrictions at the Rafah crossing during the conflict.
She warned that punitive measures taken earlier this year against her by the United States for her criticism had serious implications for the UN system’s independence, saying such steps threaten the credibility of multilateral institutions.
The report concludes that the Gaza crisis has revealed a dangerous gap between people and governments and calls for a genuine multilateralism grounded in rights and dignity for all. It reminds readers that international action has been taken before - against apartheid South Africa and other regimes - showing that law and pressure can secure justice and self-determination.
May Allah grant justice and relief to the oppressed, and guide the international community toward protecting innocent lives and upholding human dignity.
