Trump says he urged Modi to avoid war with Pakistan at Diwali reception

ISLAMABAD: At a Diwali gathering in the Oval Office, US President Donald Trump said he had a conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to refrain from going to war with Pakistan. Trump addressed a group of Indian nationals during the event and described the call as positive.
Back in May, nuclear-armed India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire to stop military actions on land, in the air and at sea. The clashes earlier this year had been among the worst in decades, involving jets, drones, missiles and artillery, and left about 70 people dead across the border. Trump has taken credit for helping end the fighting, though India has said such matters are handled bilaterally and downplayed outside involvement.
At the Diwali event Trump said, “I just spoke to your Prime Minister today. We had a great conversation. We talked about trade ... we talked a little while ago about let’s have no wars with Pakistan. ... And we have no war with Pakistan and India. That was a very, very good thing.”
He also mentioned a recent meeting with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, saying Sharif had praised him for helping prevent wider conflicts. Trump added that Modi had told him India would not be buying “too much oil” from Russia - a topic that has complicated relations and led the US to place tariffs on some Indian imports this year. Trade discussions between the US and India are ongoing.
