Indonesia a No-Show at Khamenei's Funeral, Dino Patti Djalal Questions Foreign Policy Stance
Former Deputy Foreign Minister Dino Patti Djalal criticized the absence of an official Indonesian delegation at the funeral of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on July 9, 2026. He questioned whether Indonesia's foreign policy is starting to be overshadowed by fear of the United States. Khamenei died following a joint US-Israeli military attack in Tehran.
According to Dino, Iran repeatedly invited Indonesia, but there was no response from Jakarta. Indonesia was only represented by its ambassadors to Iran and Turkmenistan. Dino highlighted that Indonesia was the only major Muslim-majority country to skip it, while countries like Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia sent minister- or president-level delegations.
Dino also floated the possibility that the absence was due to bureaucratic mismanagement. He pointed out that the Deputy Foreign Minister for Islamic World Affairs, Anis Matta, could actually have been assigned, but at the time he was on a working visit to Central Asia.
Dino stressed that Indonesia and Iran are old friends with no conflict, so the presence of a delegation should have been a moment of principled, free and active diplomacy. Previously, he also criticized the lack of public condolences, which later came to light that President Prabowo had sent a condolence letter privately.
