The Beautiful Sunnahs of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) Regarding Sleep
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah, Here are some wonderful Sunnahs of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) about how to prepare for a peaceful and blessed sleep. 1. WUDU BEFORE SLEEP: The Prophet (ﷺ) advised us to perform wudu just like for prayer before going to bed. Then lie on your right side and say: This means, O Allah, I submit my face to You, entrust my affairs to You, and turn my back to You, hoping and fearing You. There is no place to escape except to You. I believe in Your Book and Your Messenger. If one dies that night, they will die in faith. 2. RECITING SURAH IKHLAS, FALAQ, AND AN-NAS: Our Prophet (ﷺ) would seek protection from Shaytan by reciting these Surahs before bed, blowing into his hands and wiping over himself, especially his head and face, three times. 3. CLEANING THE BED BEFORE SLEEP: He (ﷺ) taught to shake out the bed sheets before lying down, saying: "Bismika Rabbi Wada'tu Janbi wa bika arfa'uhu..." asking Allah’s protection through the night. 4. DHIKR BEFORE SLEEP: It’s Sunnah to say SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar thirty-three times each before sleeping. This was a special practice passed down from the Prophet (ﷺ). 5. SLEEPING ON THE RIGHT SIDE: The Prophet (ﷺ) would lay on his right side, placing his hand under his cheek, saying: "Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya" (O Allah, in Your name I die and live), and upon waking, he praised Allah for giving him life again. 6. AVOID SLEEPING ON THE STOMACH: It’s reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) discouraged sleeping on the stomach, as it is the way of the people of Hell. 7. RECITE AYATUL KURSI BEFORE SLEEP: Reciting Ayat al-Kursi at bedtime brings protection from Shaytan until morning. 8. LAST TWO VERSES OF SURAH AL-BAQARAH: Reciting the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah before sleeping is sufficient protection and carries great reward. May Allah make it easy for us to follow these beautiful Sunnahs and grant us peaceful sleep filled with barakah. Ameen. Fi Amanillah.
