The Artistic Journey of Abeer Nehme: Embracing New Sounds with Faith and Passion
As-salamu alaykum! Have you ever wondered what it’s like for a talented Arab singer, deeply rooted in classical and sacred music traditions, to explore popular music? In a culture where listeners cherish the voices and melodies from their childhood, Lebanese artist Abeer Nehme is courageously blending contemporary pop with the elegance of her classical background.
Abeer’s move toward new styles comes from her heart more than business goals. She shares from Beirut, “I’m still figuring out if this was about overcoming fear or following curiosity. But every creative soul thrives on trying new things. I wanted to show myself and others that I’m not limited to one style. Now, I want to embrace everything - different songs, music videos - and prove it’s possible to grow without losing your true self.”
Her courage is paying off. Since releasing singles like Bi Saraha and Men Baada k, she’s reached millions, gaining new fans while respecting those who have loved her for years. The songs mix modern beats with the rich, emotional sounds of tarab, creating a beautiful balance that feels fresh yet familiar.
Abeer’s background is rich, with albums like Aroma of My Prayer that reimagine sacred music traditions and travels exploring folk songs from around the world. Collaborations with respected Lebanese composers have helped her develop a unique style that respects each genre she touches. This skill earned her recognition as an “all-styles specialist.”
She doesn’t forget her roots. All her classical training, studies, and the beautiful music she grew up with have shaped her, giving her the confidence to choose and shape her music wisely. While she once worried that exploring many styles might blur her identity, she now finds it enriches her art.
“Each style needs its own way of singing,” Abeer explains. “I can’t sing pop like tarab or vice versa. But whatever I sing, people must feel it’s truly me. It’s like cooking - you need the right spices to make it taste like you.”
Her musical journey began in Tannourine, Lebanon, where radios were replaced by carefully selected cassettes featuring legends like Umm Kulthum and Fairuz, thanks to her father’s desire for quality music. Even as a child, Abeer showed a special gift for composing and singing.
With a degree in Oriental Singing and mastery of the qanun, she has a rare depth of knowledge. Yet she refuses to be boxed in by academic labels, preferring to let her music speak for itself.
Now, in her pop work, she approaches music as a team effort - working closely with composers, producers, and lyricists to craft songs that may seem simple but are carefully arranged to touch hearts.
She’s aware that today’s fast-paced world demands shorter songs, but she believes beautiful music can still shine through if we seek it out. Each era brings its own voices and sounds.
Abeer Nehme is seizing this moment with grace and faith, blending her classical training with new explorations to create music that heals and connects people everywhere.
“Music is a language of healing, humanity, and dialogue,” she says. “It’s amazing how opening your mouth and singing can touch people’s hearts no matter where they are. I want to reach as many hearts as I can, and I feel ready now. When you can impact others through art, it’s truly a blessing - it’s magic.”
