Syrian Foreign Minister Visits Lebanon to Foster New Chapter in Relations, Insha'Allah
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shibani met with senior Lebanese leaders in Beirut recently, marking the highest-level visit from Syria's new government since last December. Both Damascus and Beirut are hopeful for a fresh start in their relationship, moving beyond a history marked by Syria's strong influence and years of presence in Lebanon. Mr. Al Shibani expressed that the visit reflects "Syria's renewed approach towards Lebanon," aiming to "overcome past difficulties and strengthen ties," acknowledging that both sides have suffered from political mishandling at times. Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji shared that Syria committed to respecting Lebanon's sovereignty and refraining from interference in its internal matters. The Syrian delegation, including the Justice Minister and intelligence chief, also met with Lebanon's President and planned to meet the Prime Minister. A key issue is the status of Syrian detainees in Lebanon, with over 2,000 Syrians held in overcrowded prisons. Lebanon is open to discussions on easing this burden, including repatriation based on the nature of offenses. Several detainees face military courts for terrorism-related charges, with some linked to opposition groups. Lebanon is also seeking information about Lebanese nationals missing in Syria and intelligence regarding political assassinations attributed to the Assad regime or its allies. Officials are working towards clearly defining the Lebanese-Syrian border as well. Meanwhile, Hezbollah, a significant supporter of the Assad government, has been weakened after last year's conflict with Israel and faces pressure to disarm. May Allah guide both nations towards peace and cooperation.
