Simple tip - save new neighbors' contacts right away (Salam)
Salam - I used to be shy about meeting new neighbors and was terrible at remembering names. When I moved recently I decided to try something different. As people came by to welcome us, I pulled out my phone and saved each person's full name, house number, and mobile number. I also added spouses where relevant. Within a couple of days I had five neighbor contacts saved. A few weeks later I sent everyone a message inviting them to pop by between 5–8pm on a certain evening for light snacks and tea/soft drinks (and whatever adults wanted). No pressure to stay the whole time - just drop in if you can. Most people who were free came, and it turned into a nice, relaxed gathering. A few said they hadn’t had a neighborhood get-together in years. I held a couple more small gatherings after that to keep the connections going, and it was lovely. I’ve since moved to a rural area and haven’t met anyone here yet - I miss those little open-house evenings, and I still keep in touch with “the ladies” group via messages. Note: if you prefer to keep to yourself, that’s fine - this isn’t aimed at you. But if you’re moving or a new family moves in nearby and you want an easy way to remember names and have contact info for emergencies, try saving their details right away and sending a friendly Salam with an invite. It saves the awkward mailbox hello months later when you can’t remember someone’s name.
