Seeking Advice About Weak Eyesight - Salam
Salam, Are there any other Muslims who deal with poor eyesight? I’d really value some advice. Others can scroll on. I’ve been feeling anxious lately about my vision getting worse - and sometimes I worry that one day, A‘ūdhu billāh, I might lose my sight entirely. Right now my prescription is about -4.5. For context, that’s quite strong and is around halfway to the legal blindness threshold in some places. I’ve worn glasses since I was about 11 or 12. Mostly it seems genetic, though one doctor once suggested trauma might have played a part - I’m not certain. I also blame lots of screen time and not noticing changes earlier. Living in a narrow street with little opportunity to look at distant views probably hasn’t helped either. I’ve tried duas and prophetic healing practices, and I’ve tried things like carrot juice and vitamins, but haven’t seen much improvement. Surgery seems like the only medical option left, but I’m wary because of risks, possible complications, and the high cost where I live. If I did consider it, the procedure people mention is LASEK, which I understand reshapes the cornea with a laser - I might have some details wrong. So aside from making dua and trusting Allah, are there practical steps I can take to protect or possibly improve my eyesight? For example, exercises, eye-care routines, ways to manage dry eyes from contact lenses, or when it might be worth speaking to a different specialist? I tend to overthink the future - In shā’ Allāh when life moves on to things like driving or starting a family, I worry how this will affect me and those around me. P.S. I also wear contact lenses sometimes for confidence, but they often make my eyes dry and uncomfortable (probably dry eye syndrome). JazakAllahu khayran to anyone who can share tips or personal experience.
