Salat Istisqa for Praying for Rain: Evidence, Procedures, Intentions, and Supplications
Salat istisqa is a highly recommended sunnah prayer that is encouraged during drought to ask for rain. The evidence comes from hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), including a narration from Aisha (RA) about the Prophet leading prayers in an open field until rain fell.
The procedure can be done like the Eid prayer or a two-rakah sunnah prayer without extra takbirs. Generally, the imam and followers gather in an open area without adhan and iqamah, perform two rakahs of prayer, then the imam delivers the istisqa sermon, which contains calls to repent and supplications for rain.
Some supplications after the istisqa prayer include asking for rain that is helpful, fertile, and beneficial. For example: "Allahummasqina ghaitsan mughitsan, mari'an, hani'an..." (O Allah, send down upon us rain that is a relief, pleasant, and beneficial...).
