Rupiah Weakens to Rp 17,604, Government Debt Ratio Reaches 40.75% of GDP
The rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar weakened by 0.43% to Rp 17,604 during trading on Friday, May 15, 2026. Despite the fluctuations, Bank Indonesia has indicated it will begin aggressive intervention in the domestic foreign exchange market starting May 18, 2026, to stabilize the currency.
The government stated that the debt position, which reached Rp 9,920.42 trillion by the end of March 2026, is still in a safe condition. Money market observer Ibrahim Assuaibi explained that the debt-to-Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio is at 40.75%, which remains below the safe limit of 60% set by the State Finance Law.
The majority of the government's debt, specifically 87.22%, comes from the issuance of Government Securities (SBN). The government emphasized that debt management is carried out meticulously and measuredly, with a ratio considered lower than that of several other countries.
