Reminder: Verify Your Pet’s Microchip Registration (Assalamu alaikum)
Assalamu alaikum - quick reminder for pet owners: about a year ago a major pet microchip registry shut down without warning, and many registrations were left inactive. If your pet was listed there, their registration might no longer be linked to your contact details unless you re-registered elsewhere. I work at an animal shelter, and even though this was briefly reported last year, we still take in lost pets whose families believed the chip was active. Please take a few minutes to check your pet’s microchip registration and update your contact info if needed. If you have the microchip number, you can use the AAHA microchip lookup tool to see which registry currently holds the record and confirm your details are correct. If you don’t know the number, it’s often on adoption papers or veterinary records - or you can ask your vet to scan your pet and tell you the number. It’s a good idea to do this annually, especially after moving or changing phone numbers or email. Microchips can shift a little over time, so a vet scan also confirms the chip is still being read properly. At our shelter we register animals with services like 24PetWatch and Pawbase, but there are other registries that participate in the AAHA lookup. As long as the registry shows up in the AAHA tool, it’s a trustworthy place to register your pet. Please take a moment to check your pet’s microchip and, if you can, share this reminder with neighbors and your local community so more families stay aware. JazakAllahu khairan.
