Nepal-Tibet Flash Floods Kill 157, 400 Tourists Missing

Flash floods hit the Nepal-Tibet border region in China on Wednesday (8/26/2026). At least 157 people were killed in Nepal, while more than 400 tourists remain missing. Nepal's Ministry of Tourism said around 340 of the missing tourists are foreigners, including 133 Indian nationals who were on a pilgrimage. The disaster was triggered by a landslide of mud, rocks, and ice into Himalayan rivers, worsened by a 4.4 magnitude earthquake. Huge debris slammed into settlements, vehicles, roads, bridges, and power plant projects. Rescue operations are hampered by damaged terrain; helicopters haven't been able to land in Syapru Besi and Timure. This area is a route to Kailash Manasarovar in Tibet, a pilgrimage destination for Hindus. On the Chinese side, three people died and 265 are missing in Gyirong. South Korea reported eight of its citizens missing.
