Love and Mental Health Struggles
Assalamu alaikum everyone. I'm sorry for the long post, but I'm really in need of advice and duas. A few months ago, I started talking to a brother online around the day after Arafat-I remember it clearly because I had made dua for my naseeb. It wasn't meant to be romantic at first; we just connected over books and poetry. But we ended up developing feelings, and it became serious. There was some dishonesty initially, but he eventually came clean, crying and asking me to accept him, and I did. He has bipolar disorder and paraphrenia, and during episodes he's not himself-he hurts himself and says hurtful things, even to me. His personality can shift drastically; sometimes he's a composed 24-year-old, other times he's a different person entirely. It’s been incredibly tough for both of us. He made so many promises to get better and to marry me, and we truly intended to make things halal. His father knew about me but didn’t approve, mainly because of his mental health. It breaks my heart to hear him cry and see him sedate himself. Alhamdulillah, he’s been reconnecting with his deen lately, which helped him let go of some guilt, but that’s also why we decided to end things while staying close until we’re both ready. I cry every day, no matter how much I pray or make dua. Now he’s given up all hope, saying he’s not worthy of a normal life. I can’t even describe the pain-it feels like I can’t breathe when someone so dear loses all faith. I’m starting university soon, and he’s in his third year; we’re both young, but he has no hope for the future. I beg you, please make dua for us-especially for him. Sometimes he calls me at 5 a.m. during an episode, crying and hurting himself, and it destroys me. His life has been so hard: his mother won’t talk to him, his siblings have to see him in secret, and he was bullied so severely as a child that it caused blindness. Please make dua for him, I’m desperate. If you love someone truly, don’t let small disagreements push you apart-try to make things right and keep it halal. The hardest part is that, despite our love, he’s clearly said he can’t handle a relationship, and that’s what shatters me the most.
