Update: Death Toll from KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 Fire Rises to 5
The number of people killed in the fire aboard KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 in Sumenep waters has gone up to five. Meanwhile, the survivor count from the evacuation has also increased to 227.
Based on Surabaya Basarnas data as of Sunday (Aug 2), the evacuation was carried out by several ships, including KM Meratus Pematang Siantar (109 survivors, 2 dead), TB Hasnur 26 (65 survivors, 1 dead), KM Transco Arafura (17 survivors), and others.
KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 caught fire while sailing from Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya to Makassar. Surabaya SAR chief Nanang Sigit received the fire report at 08:24 WIB from the Tanjung Perak harbormaster.
The ship owner, PT Atosim Lampung Pelayaran, confirmed the incident. The ship was carrying around 250 people. The captain reported the fire around 06:00–07:00 WIB north of Madura, but then could not be reached again.
