Habib Rizieq Criticizes Mahfud MD on Amar Ma'ruf Nahi Mungkar Statement
Grand Imam of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) Habib Rizieq Shihab criticized former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD, who said that currently no Islamic mass organizations carry out the function of amar ma'ruf nahi mungkar (enjoining good and forbidding evil). Habib Rizieq sees the statement as contradicting Mahfud's stance while in office, because FPI, which he says performed that function, was actually disbanded during his tenure.
"There's a former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, now shouting. What did he say? Now in Indonesia there's no organization that does amar ma'ruf nahi mungkar," said Habib Rizieq in his lecture, Monday (27/7/2026). He stressed that Mahfud was the one who disbanded FPI, and now he's seen as playing the "late hero."
Habib Rizieq also reminded the public not to be easily swayed by statements from former officials who only become vocal after leaving office. Previously, Mahfud MD stated that the function of nahi mungkar (forbidding evil) is now rarely carried out, and the role of criticism is mostly done through podcasts and public discussions.
