Habib Rizieq Criticizes Mahfud MD: If He Gets a Position, He Could Change His Stance Again
The Grand Imam of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), Habib Rizieq Shihab, has fired a critique at former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD. He thinks Mahfud is being inconsistent because now he’s criticizing the lack of role of Islamic mass organizations in forbidding evil, even though when he was in office he helped dissolve the FPI.
Habib Rizieq mocked Mahfud, who he thinks is just angry because he didn’t get a position, and said if he’s given a post again, he might switch his stance once more. "Tomorrow if he’s given a seat by him, he’d even become a devil, brother. Because it’s already proven yesterday he was a devil, the one who dissolved FPI," he said.
Earlier, Mahfud MD stated that Islamic mass organizations nowadays do more to enjoin good, but rarely forbid evil. He reckons criticism of the government actually comes more from podcasts, not from organizations like NU, Muhammadiyah, or MUI.
The FPI itself was dissolved by the government on December 30, 2020 through a joint decree, which among others was signed by Mahfud MD. This exchange of criticisms has sparked public debate about the role of Islamic mass organizations after the change of government.
