Do Children Have Rights in Islam, or Is It All About Duties?
Assalamu alaikum, dear brothers and sisters. I often hear about the rights of parents in Islam, but what about the rights of children? Do we have any, or is it all just obligation? I’m a single sister, and I take care of my elderly mother financially and logistically. My brother is married with kids, but his wife limits how much time he can spend with us, saying his main responsibility is to her. So, my mother can only visit them at specific times, and he calls her on a set schedule. I don’t have children, and mostly I’m content to support my mother. But the physical and emotional burden is becoming too much. My job is extremely demanding, and I manage my home alone-repairs, bills, taxes, driving my mother around, keeping her company, arranging outings, and trying to bring some joy into her life. Lately, though, she’s been snapping at me, criticizing me constantly, and sulking. Every few days, I end up in tears. I’m exhausted and don’t know how to continue. Without children or a support system, I sometimes feel like my life is just a test without relief. What does Islam say about the rights of children in such situations? I pray for guidance.
