Rupiah Weakens Against Riyal, Indonesian Hajj Pilgrims Affected, Purchasing Power Drops
The weakening of the Rupiah against the US dollar throughout 2025 up to the 2026 Hajj season hits Indonesian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia. The Rupiah rate against the Saudi Riyal rose about 9 percent, from around Rp 4,300–Rp 4,400 per Riyal in 2025 to Rp 4,700–Rp 4,750 per Riyal in 2026.
This makes personal spending pricier for pilgrims, especially for souvenirs, extra meals, and local transport. A pilgrim from Surabaya admitted they have to be more careful managing money because of the weaker exchange rate. With a difference of about Rp 400 per Riyal, spending 5,000 Riyals requires an extra cost of around Rp 2 million.
Indonesia has a quota of about 220,000 pilgrims in 2026. If the average personal spending drops by Rp 1 million per pilgrim, the potential decrease in money circulation could reach Rp 220 billion. Pressure on the Rupiah is influenced by global factors like a strengthening US dollar and international trade dynamics.
Even so, pilgrims' devotion remains strong. Group officers urge pilgrims to manage their budgets more wisely and prioritize essential needs during the pilgrimage.
