Could we have a Ramadan/Eid version of Angel Trees?
As-salamu alaykum - I’ve been thinking about something that could really help families during Ramadan and Eid. There’s a program called Angel Trees (you might know them for Christmas) where trees are filled with tags - each tag has a child’s name, sizes, and things they need or wish for. People pick a tag, buy the items on the list, and the organizers coordinate getting the gifts to the family. There are also general tags so kids who don’t get picked still receive essentials. What makes it different from usual donation or zakat drives is how personal it is. These tags often include necessities like coats, socks, or hygiene items, but also small wishes - a jacket in a favorite color, socks with a favourite cartoon, or a requested book. I once saw a tag from an elderly man asking just for laundry detergent - it really stuck with me. I know our masjids already run food drives, clothing collections, and zakat/sadaqah programs, mashaAllah. Those are vital. But giving someone exactly what they need or truly want adds something special. It makes the giver feel connected and the recipient feel seen. I’ve seen people inspired by Angel Tree shopping online, and it made me wish our masjids would set up something similar for Ramadan or Eid - not just a general fund but a tag-style system where families can list specific needs and wishes. That way donors can choose tags and provide items that meet both needs and heartfelt wants. Does anyone’s mosque do something like this, or are there plans to start one? I’d love to hear experiences or ideas - maybe we can get this started in our community, inshaAllah.
