Beginning the Path (continued)
As-salamu alaykum. I’m sharing more of my journey (see my earlier post for the start if you’re curious). After a quick first visit to the masjid, I went back yesterday feeling a bit more determined to speak with someone. I walked into the prayer hall and noticed the Imam there. We made eye contact and he came over-he probably could tell I looked a little unsure. I told him I was new and wanted to learn more. He asked what I already knew about Islam; I said I understood the basics and that I’m trying to learn a bit every day. Even though I was familiar with some things, he kindly explained the Five Pillars and I listened without interrupting. He then showed me around the facilities and gave me some reading materials. When the prayer began I stood to the side and observed. Afterward we exchanged numbers so I can reach out if I have questions. I’m really pleased with how it went. It’s a little intimidating at first, but for anyone like me who wants to learn or embrace Islam, I wanted to share my experience. It just takes a bit of courage to approach the Imam with an open heart and say you’re new and want to learn. Insha’Allah he’ll guide you and point you in the right direction. The journey continues.
