Aceh Pilgrims Receive Funds from 220-Year-Old Baitul Asyi Endowment
Nazir of the Baitul Asyi endowment, Sheikh Abdul Latif Muhammad Baltu, symbolically handed over endowment funds to pilgrims from Aceh in Mecca on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. This endowment originates from assets left by the Acehnese scholar, Habib Abdurrahman bin Alwi Al-Habsyi (Habib Bugak Asyi), pledged in 1809 CE to support Acehnese people performing the Hajj pilgrimage.
During the 2026 Hajj season, about 11.2 million riyal was distributed to 5,426 pilgrims, with each receiving 2,000 riyal or around Rp9.2 million. The distribution was carried out step by step for all groups originating from Aceh, starting on May 10, 2026 at the Burj Al-Wahda Hotel in Mecca.
The Baitul Asyi endowment began from strategic land near the Grand Mosque, which has now been developed into hotels and commercial buildings, with the asset value estimated to reach Rp5.2 trillion. The disbursement of funds from managing these assets is a tradition of Islamic philanthropy that has been ongoing for over two centuries, managed generationally by nazirs from Aceh in Mecca.
