A few questions about working on a journal and an old promise
As-salamu alaykum. I have three questions and would appreciate some practical thoughts. First: I’m on a university journal team. We have meetings to choose and plan articles, and sometimes some topics are about things that are haram from an Islamic perspective (for example LGBT issues or alcohol). I personally avoid writing those pieces when given a choice, but I’m wondering: is it permissible for me to write articles on halal topics while the same journal also publishes pieces on haram subjects? Second: A while back I might have made a promise to someone. I don’t remember the exact wording - I’m pretty sure I didn’t say “wallah,” but I can’t recall if she asked “Do you promise?” and I answered “yes.” I’m unsure whether that counted as an oath and whether I already paid any kaffarah I owed. Do I need to pay kaffarah for that possible broken promise? Third: If I do need to pay kaffarah: most online resources I find give options for kaffarah for missed Ramadan fasts. Can I use those same kaffarah alternatives (like feeding a poor person or fasting) with the intention that it is to expiate a broken oath, or is there a different procedure? Jazak Allah khair for any guidance. I’m looking for a simple, practical answer and will follow up with more details if needed.
