US labels atrocities in El-Fasher as genocide, urges all measures to stop the war
As-salamu alaykum. The US on Thursday accused Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces and allied militias of committing genocide in El-Fasher, North Darfur, while UN officials warn of worsening crimes against civilians there.
A US deputy ambassador to the UN said these forces have systematically killed men and boys, including infants, and deliberately targeted women and children for rape and other brutal sexual violence, and that the attacks are ethnically motivated. She added that humanitarian promises from these groups are not enough - they must be carried out.
Reports say RSF fighters have been blocking people trying to flee and preventing aid from reaching those trapped. The situation was described as tragic and appalling, and the US called for those responsible to be held accountable, including with sanctions. Council members were urged to update the Darfur-era sanctions list and to use every tool available to help restore peace.
The diplomat also condemned the recent expulsion of two senior World Food Programme officials by Sudan’s army-led government, saying it hampers relief efforts as parts of the country face the threat of famine.
Ending the war in Sudan remains a priority, she said, and Washington is committed to working with partners to secure an immediate humanitarian truce and a return to civilian-led governance. A neutral, inclusive and transparent transition process, led by the Sudanese people, is needed to prevent further spread of violence and to enable meaningful negotiations.
These remarks came during an emergency session called over the grave situation in El-Fasher, where UN officials report mass killings, rapes and executions amid an RSF offensive that has killed thousands and displaced tens of thousands.
