UI Doctor Recommends Mandatory Fluid Intake Procedure for Hajj Pilgrims in Extreme Weather
Extreme hot weather in the Holy Land during this year's hajj season increases the risk of dehydration and heatstroke for pilgrims. Clinical nutrition specialist, Dr. Pande Putu Agus Mahendra, M.Gizi, Sp.GK, urges pilgrims to consume at least 150 milliliters of mineral water per hour to maintain hydration during worship.
The normal fluid requirement for adults is generally 8-10 glasses per day, but high physical activity and extreme temperatures in Saudi Arabia drastically increase this need. Dehydration can trigger systemic disturbances like heavier heart workload and impaired kidney function, along with immediate symptoms such as weakness, dizziness, headaches, and nausea.
Dr. Pande emphasizes that pilgrims should not wait until they feel thirsty to drink, because the sensation of thirst can diminish during chronic dehydration. He recommends gradual fluid intake throughout the day, increasing consumption of high-water-content fruits, and monitoring urine color as a hydration indicator. The Ministry of Hajj of Indonesia also educates pilgrims to regularly drink water, use head protection, and periodically rest in shaded areas.
