Trump suggests freezing the front lines in Ukraine - what would that mean?
As-salamu alaykum - I wanted to share a simple recap of recent comments from former US President Donald Trump about the war in Ukraine and what freezing the front lines might look like.
Trump has proposed stopping the fighting where the lines are now and using those positions as a baseline for later negotiations over territory. He said the fighting should be cut off at the current battle line and any further land swaps could be negotiated down the road. He also denied telling President Zelenskyy to give up the whole Donbas region, though he claimed a large share of territory is already under Russian control.
Russia’s position has been that it wants to keep the land it seized and possibly gain more before agreeing to any ceasefire. Ukraine has consistently said it wants to recover all its land. Trump has shifted his public comments at times - at one point saying both sides might give up territory, and at another saying Ukraine could retake its land militarily.
Currently, most of the fighting and territorial gains have been in Donetsk and Luhansk (the Donbas), Kherson and Zaporizhia, with a smaller area in Kharkiv province held by Russia. Donetsk and Luhansk have seen the heaviest fighting; Russia controls all of Luhansk and much of Donetsk, plus large parts of Kherson and Zaporizhia. Zaporizhia is an important industrial area and also hosts Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.
European leaders and President Zelenskyy have expressed support for using the current line of contact as the starting point for talks. Russia, however, has rejected the freezing idea unless it gets firm gains and has stated it wants long-term, sustainable peace on its terms. There were reports Moscow demanded control of all of the Donbas in private communications.
A planned meeting between Trump and Putin in Budapest was called off by Trump, who said he didn’t want a meeting that wouldn’t produce results.
That’s the basic picture - a proposal to halt fighting where it stands now, backing from some European leaders and Ukraine for negotiations from that line, and firm resistance from Russia unless it secures territorial gains.
