Trial from Allah or a consequence for sin?

Salam, everyone. Lately, I've been facing some challenges, and I'm trying to understand if they're a test of my faith from Allah or if they're a punishment for something I did wrong. I don't consider myself a major sinner, but sometimes I struggle with acts Allah has forbidden, like impure thoughts and actions. After slipping, I truly regret it and immediately turn to Allah in prayer, seeking His forgiveness.
