The rules-based order was always a fiction; Gaza and Greenland exposed it
Carney called the so‑called rules-based order a “pleasant fiction.” For much of the Global South, that fiction never existed-US interventions in Latin America and the Middle East showed sovereignty only mattered when it suited Washington. Gaza’s devastation and Western double standards-strong support for Israel despite huge civilian tolls and quick praise for ICC action only when it targeted Russia-make the hypocrisy clear. Even allies are now pressured (Greenland), showing the old US-led arrangement is fraying. Any true order must equally respect human rights, sovereignty and international law, not just Western interests.
