Etihad Rail’s success may hinge on first and last mile
Etihad Rail is launching passenger services connecting Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Fujairah, but experts say the real test is how easily people can reach the stations. With car use high and summer heat extreme, good connections - shaded walkways, feeder buses, taxis, ride-hailing links, coordinated schedules and seamless ticketing - will be crucial. If stations become convenient mobility hubs and developments around them support transit use, more people may leave their cars. Etihad Rail aims for 10 million riders a year once fully operational, but the first/last mile will likely decide if commuters actually switch.
