As-salamu alaykum - My experience with a beggar so you know what to expect
As-salamu alaykum. I want to share a personal experience so others know what to expect. A young man, about 17 and from Gambia, asked me for money. I gave him $33.50. After that he asked for more and tried to pressure me, saying he couldn’t even buy a bag of rice or vegetables with what I gave. He lied - with that amount he could have bought almost 100 kilos of rice. I wasn’t angry; he apologised. The meeting left me uncomfortable and I wouldn’t want to go through it again. In my town there are better, more respectful ways to give sadaqah and help people. These kinds of beggars felt arrogant, entitled, and rude. Still, I don’t regret giving something - maybe his younger siblings will have food because of it. What upset me more was how he treated me. Also a reminder for myself and others: begging is not the right path in Islam. We should turn to Allah and seek lawful means, and encourage others to do the same. “If you knew how bad begging is, no one would go to anyone else and ask him for anything.” (Sunan an-Nasa’i 258)
