Surah Al-Lahab Verses 1-5: Latin, Meaning, Tafsir, and Asbabun Nuzul
Surah Al-Lahab, which has five verses, talks about arrogance and threats for those who oppose the da'wah. The first verse says, 'May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he!' This surah emphasizes that wealth and efforts won't save anyone from punishment.
Asbabun nuzul of this surah is related to the rejection by Abu Lahab, the uncle of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), of the warning delivered at Mount Safa. When the Prophet called his relatives, Abu Lahab said, 'May you be cursed! Didn't you gather us just for this?' Allah then revealed this surah.
The tafsir of the verses explains: verse 2 states that Abu Lahab's wealth is useless; verse 3 about the blazing fire; verses 4 and 5 about Abu Lahab's wife who spread slander and is threatened with a rope of palm fiber around her neck. This surah serves as a warning for those who oppose the truth.
Reading this surah is still an act of worship. Every letter of the Qur'an brings reward, as the Prophet said, 'Whoever reads one letter of the Qur'an, for him is one good deed, multiplied by ten.'
