Sheinbaum: US Military Action on Mexican Soil ‘Won’t’ Happen - As-salamu alaykum
As-salamu alaykum. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday dismissed the chance of US troops operating on Mexican territory after reports that Washington might send forces south of the border. “That won’t happen,” Sheinbaum told reporters, reacting to a news story that the US administration was considering ground operations against powerful cartels in her country. She added, “Furthermore, we do not agree” with any kind of intervention. The US government has accused Mexico of not doing enough to stop drugs entering its borders and has labeled several Mexican cartels as “terrorist” groups. Earlier this year, there was an offer to send troops to Mexico to combat drug cartels, which Sheinbaum rejected. During a meeting in September, a US official praised her efforts against drug trafficking and pledged to respect Mexico’s sovereignty. Still, a later report said US forces and intelligence personnel have been training for a possible mission in Mexico, though the deployment was described as “not imminent” and no final decision had been made. Carrying out operations inside Mexico would be a major escalation of US actions against Latin American drug networks. Recent US strikes on suspected drug vessels in the Pacific and Caribbean have reportedly killed dozens, with several attacks affecting boats near Mexican waters and causing multiple fatalities. Investigations into survivors have not always found anyone alive.
