Procedures for Caring for the Deceased in Islam: Complete Guide from Washing to Burial
Managing the deceased in Islam is a duty of great virtue. In a hadith reported by Jamaah and Muslim, it is stated that whoever accompanies a funeral procession and performs the funeral prayer will receive a reward of one qirath, and if they accompany it until the completion of the burial, they receive two qiraths.
The process of caring for the deceased consists of four main stages according to Islamic law. First, washing the deceased by someone of the same gender (except for mahrams) in a private place, cleansing the entire body including performing wudhu. Second, shrouding with clean white cloth in odd numbers, scented with fragrance, with different procedures for men (3 layers) and women (5 layers).
Third, performing the funeral prayer, which consists of 4 takbirs without bowing or prostrating. Fourth, burying in a deep lahad grave (approximately 2–2.5 meters) facing the qiblah. After the body is placed and covered with boards, soil is piled while reciting the burial prayer three times. Mourners are advised to stay briefly to recite talqin and pray for the deceased.
