Just starting out, and I'm struggling with the idea of forgiveness in tough cases.

As a new Muslim, I keep hearing that we should forgive others and maybe even try to see things from their side before judging. Honestly though, how do you forgive people who have done truly awful things, like those who hurt the innocent? It's something I can't stop thinking about, and I don't mean any disrespect-I'm just trying to understand.
