Player Faces Racist Abuse at Match in Munich - Club Responds
As-salamu alaykum - I want to share something upsetting that happened at a recent match in Munich. 1860 Munich have apologised after one of their supporters racially abused Energie Cottbus forward Justin Butler during the league game on Saturday. The club said they will push for a full inquiry and will hold the spectator responsible using every available measure. The match was nearly stopped after monkey noises came from someone among the 1860 fans. Players from both sides, stewards and other spectators helped identify the person, who was handed over to the police. The stadium announcer addressed the incident and many 1860 fans chanted against racism while play was paused. After about a 10-minute interruption the match continued. Referee Konrad Oldhafer said Butler told him he had been targeted by someone making monkey sounds. “I didn’t hear them myself,” Oldhafer told MagentaSport, “but I immediately made it clear to the player that we were taking it very seriously.” He spoke with both captains and with Butler, who is Black, and after being told the alleged offender was removed, asked Butler if he could carry on. Butler chose to resume. Butler’s teammate Axel Borgmann called it appalling and said it’s sad this keeps happening. He was glad the fan was identified and removed from the stadium. May Allah protect people from such hatred and guide communities to stand against racism.
