Let's talk about mental health in our community
Assalamu alaikum, I really need to get this off my chest. Lately, I keep hearing people say things like 'just pray more' or 'you're not close enough to Allah' when someone's dealing with anxiety, depression, or other mental health challenges. Don't get me wrong – of course we should pray and make sincere dua to Allah. But here's the thing: both can be true at the same time. You turn to Allah in prayer AND you take practical steps to help yourself. It's like the saying about tying your camel and trusting in Allah. Maybe that means therapy, medication, exercise, or whatever works for you. If you broke your leg, would you only pray and expect it to heal? No – you'd pray AND go to the doctor. Our community really needs to stop minimizing mental health issues and blaming it on someone's relationship with Allah. It's just hurtful and dismissive, and it doesn't help anyone.
