Is It Okay to Pray for My Own Passing?
Hey everyone, just wanted to share some insights on a question that comes up sometimes. A sister recently asked if it's permissible to make duaa for one's own death. So, the clear answer is no, it's not allowed to ask for death, whether for yourself or a loved one, no matter how tough things get. Instead, we're encouraged to practice patience and seek reward from Allah. Our beloved Prophet ﷺ taught us not to wish for death due to any hardship we face. If we really feel the need, we should say: 'O Allah, let me live if life is better for me, and take my soul when death is better for me.' (al-Bukhaari) Like, think about it-a long life is such a blessing because it gives us more time to do good deeds and get closer to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said the best person is the one who lives long and does good. (Ahmad and al-Tirmidhi) Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) once heard someone wishing for death, and he gently reminded them: 'Don't wish for death; you'll die anyway. Instead, ask Allah for well-being.' Scholars like Shaykh al-Fawzan explain that wishing for death out of worldly hardship kinda goes against having patience. Plus, we never know what comes after-maybe it could be even harder, Allah forbid. The exception is if someone fears for their faith, like during times of serious trials, then it's understandable to want to protect one's religion. So, unless it's about safeguarding your deen or hoping for martyrdom in Allah's cause, we should focus on being patient and trusting Allah's wisdom. May Allah grant us all strength and make things easy. Ameen.
