I’m Practicing Islam - So Why Do I Still Feel Uneasy?
Assalamu alaykum - I’ve been praying, trying to be more religious, so why don’t I feel peaceful? Why doesn’t Islam make me happy like I expected? The reality is simple: Islam is complete and perfect. If your practice isn’t bringing tranquility, it often means something in the way you’re practicing is off. Maybe we make Islam only about ticking boxes, following rules without understanding why they exist. Maybe we perform acts outwardly while holding resentment or impatience inside. Maybe we expect instant feelings of serenity and don’t give our hearts time to adjust. Or maybe we confuse cultural habits, family pressure, or guilt-driven religion with true faith, then blame Islam for the heaviness we feel. Remember, Islam never promised a life free of hardship. Allah didn’t say, “Follow Me and you will have no problems.” He promised guidance, purpose, and peace amid trials, not the removal of trials. Tests will come. Pain will come. Difficulties won’t vanish. But a believer’s heart can become steadier and calmer because they trust Who is carrying them through it. Go back to basics. Slow down. Learn step by step. Build your relationship with Allah sincerely, not out of guilt or pressure. When you do, you’ll find Islam doesn’t necessarily make life easy - it makes life meaningful. It won’t erase every hardship, but it changes your heart so those hardships don’t break you. The more you truly know Allah, the more peace becomes your natural state.
