Helpful Tips for Moving, Insha'Allah
As-salamu alaykum! A friend of mine is moving soon, and it reminded me of some useful tips I’ve picked up over the years from moving a lot. Now that I own my own home, I hope I won’t have to move again, but I thought I’d share these tips to make the process easier, Insha’Allah. First, wrap your dishes in clean clothes instead of newspaper. Newspaper can leave your dishes dirty, and then you have to wash them again. This way, you’re packing two things at once! For your delicate clothes, get heavy-duty garbage bags with pull ties. Keep your clothes hanging, then pull the bag up over the hangers and tie it tightly around them. It keeps the clothes bundled and neat. Buy some washi tape and use it to label your electronics. Put a piece on the device and the matching plug. Use different colors for different machines. Keep the tape on even after the move – it helps you know which plug goes where, especially for USB chargers. Have a special box in every room for things you’re unsure about or haven’t used in a while. After the move, if you haven’t touched those items in six months, consider donating or clearing them out. Put colored tape on the outside of boxes to show which room they belong in (like pink tape for the kitchen). At the new place, hang a piece of the same tape on the door or cupboard pull to help you organize. Try not to cook on the day of the move or the night before – give yourself a break! Load the biggest items into the moving truck first, then pack smaller things around and on top of them. For example, put nightstands under the dining table (with blankets to protect them) and boxes stacked up to the ceiling on top. Move big furniture back to front and pack boxes on top. Take the drawers out of dressers before moving them. Put TVs in separate loads or a different vehicle, wrapped in blankets. When you hang clothes back up, put them on hangers the wrong way around. After wearing an item, turn the hanger the right way. After six months, check which clothes you haven’t worn and consider donating them. Any other tips that have worked for you, brothers and sisters?
