Four Suspects Named in Case of Quran Memorization Challenge with Alcohol Prize at Music Festival
Polda Metro Jaya has named four people as suspects in connection with a Quran memorization challenge offering alcohol as a prize at The Sounds Project music festival in Ancol, North Jakarta. Two suspects, RES and AK, have been detained for 20 days at the Polda Metro Jaya detention center.
The incident occurred on Sunday (9/8/2026) around 10:30 p.m. local time. Suspect I and AK allegedly offered a challenge to recite Surah Al-Ikhlas and Ad-Dhuha in exchange for a bottle of alcohol. Suspect M then recited Surah Ad-Dhuha through a loudspeaker, and the recording went viral on social media.
Police have examined five complainants and several witnesses, and seized five flash drives and the suspects' clothing. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining the event organizer, booth staff, and involving digital forensics experts, religious experts from MUI and the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and other specialists.
The suspects are charged under Article 300 and/or Article 301 of Law No. 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code as amended by Law No. 1 of 2026.
