Finding My Path as a New Muslim
As-salamu alaykum, I recently converted to Islam and I'm facing a challenging time with people giving me unsolicited advice and incorrect information. For instance, some say we must spend the whole day in the kitchen during Ramadan, but I've learned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) emphasized the importance of simplicity. For me, keeping things simple, especially when it comes to eating after a day of fasting, feels right. I'm working hard to study and understand my new faith, but sometimes I'm met with negativity when I ask questions or disagree with certain practices. Some even encourage me to drink alcohol, which goes against my beliefs. I'm trying to stay strong and be a good person, but it's not easy. I question myself a lot and sometimes my faith wavers, especially when others make hurtful comments about my inability to speak Arabic or suggest I should take a Muslim name. I want to know if it's okay to question certain practices, like celebrating the prophets' birthdays, which I've learned might be considered an innovation. Can asking questions and disagreeing with some practices make me a bad person? I appreciate any guidance and support.
