Faith Is Not Just a Claim: Kiai Cholil's Message at the Prophet's Mawlid
The commemoration of the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) Mawlid should be a means to measure the quality of one's faith, not just a ceremony. MUI Deputy Chairman KH. M. Cholil Nafis emphasized that faith is not enough with verbal confession; a true believer must emulate the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by guarding speech and actions so as not to disturb others.
Kiai Cholil explained that love for the Prophet must be manifested in obedience to carrying out his commands and avoiding his prohibitions. Mawlid is also a moment for self-reflection (muhasabah) to assess the extent to which a person deserves to be called a follower of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
He encouraged Muslims to apply three main attitudes of the Prophet: being friendly (basthul wajhi), not making things difficult for others (kafful adza), and liking to sacrifice (bazhlun nada). This message is relevant amid social life often marked by conflict, emphasizing unity as in the spirit of the Medina Charter and Indonesian Unity.
