Expert: Handling Online Gambling Must Include Recovery for Addicted Victims, Punishing Players Isn't Enough

Special criminal law expert from Dr. Soetomo University Surabaya, Muhammad Taufik, reckons dealing with online gambling isn't enough just by criminalizing the players. The state needs to step in with protection, education, and recovery for people who are hooked. According to Taufik, players who are already addicted should also be seen as victims. The government, especially the Ministry of Social Affairs, is being asked to beef up social rehabilitation and support for those caught up in it and their families. He pointed out how law enforcement often only goes after players, like in the case of Yudi Surya who got sentenced to a year in prison for playing slot games through an app. Taufik urged authorities to track down the ones who built the systems, control the platforms, and rake in the profits. Cracking down on online gambling needs to happen from top to bottom, covering prevention, education, victim recovery, and dismantling the digital networks that facilitate the gambling.
