5 Virtues of Surah Al-Fatihah: The Blessed Mother of the Quran
Surah Al-Fatihah, known as Ummul Quran or the mother of the Quran, holds a special position in Islam. Recited at least 17 times a day in the five daily prayers, this surah is the core of Islamic teachings condensed into seven short verses. Its greatness is even affirmed by Allah SWT in the Quran in Surah Al-Hijr verse 87, which refers to it as 'the seven oft-repeated verses' and part of the great Quran.
According to hadith narrated from the companions Abu Hurairah and Ubay bin Ka'ab, Allah did not reveal a chapter comparable to the greatness of Al-Fatihah in the Torah or the Gospel. Additionally, reciting Al-Fatihah is a condition for the validity of prayer, as stated by the Prophet Muhammad SAW from Ubadah bin Shamit: 'The prayer of a person who does not recite Surah Al-Fatihah is not valid.'
Other virtues include the story of the descent of two special 'lights'-Al-Fatihah and the closing verses of Surah Al-Baqarah-granted only to Prophet Muhammad SAW. This surah also functions as ruqyah (healing), as demonstrated by the companion Abu Said Al-Khudri who cured someone by reciting it. This is in line with the hadith that states, 'The Opening of the Book is a cure for poison.'
